Live scan fingerprinting concept

Digital Fingerprinting & Live Scan Basics

Employers, licensing boards, and agencies may require live scan or digital fingerprint submissions for background checks. This article explains the concept so you can prepare for an appointment with an authorized operator.

What live scan means

Instead of ink cards alone, electronic scanners capture fingerprint images and transmit them to designated agencies when authorized. Not every shop can submit to every agency—ORI codes and agency account numbers matter.

What to bring

  • Government photo ID
  • Any request form listing the agency ORI / mail code
  • Payment method accepted by the operator you choose
  • Additional IDs if the requesting agency requires them

After the appointment

Processing times are controlled by receiving agencies, not by this website. Keep your receipt and any tracking numbers the operator provides.

We do not perform fingerprinting or background checks.

Ink cards vs live scan

Some out-of-state agencies still request FD-258 ink cards. Confirm the medium before you travel to a site that only offers live scan submission to in-state accounts. Rolling quality matters—smudged cards delay licensing.

If your fingerprints are naturally worn, operators may need multiple attempts; arrive early and avoid heavy hand lotions that interfere with capture.

Practical notes on Digital Fingerprinting & Live Scan Basics

Readers use this page while comparing real-world providers. Keep a short checklist of your constraints—budget range you will confirm elsewhere, deadline, package weight, whether you need multi-carrier receiving, and whether remote scanning matters. Bring that checklist to any vendor you contact so sales conversations stay grounded.

Regulations and carrier products change. Before you act on any step that involves identity documents, money, or legal filings, confirm details on the official agency or carrier site.
